Bratz Are BACK Baybee!

NEW YORK — New Bratz dolls are heading to stores after a federal court overturned a ruling that their maker, MGA Entertainment, had to turn over the brand to Mattel Inc.
Two new lines of the doe-eyed dolls should hit stores such as Toys R Us, Target and Walmart by the end of August.
Bratz, the pouty-lipped, provocatively dressed rivals to Mattel's Barbie, have been scarce as Mattel and MGA battled over their rights. Last week an appeals court overturned a lower court's ruling upholding Mattel's claim that Bratz's designer was actually working for Mattel when he created them and Mattel should get ownership of the trademark. The case may be retried.
MGA, which launched the doll 10 years ago, is shipping several new Bratz products:
_ "Passion for Fashion" dolls that retail for $9.99 and come with extra clothes and accessories;
_ "Party" dolls, which retail for $19.99 and come with both day wear and party wear.
_ a pair of twins, Roxxi and Phoebe, in a two-pack for $24.99;
_ two Bratz Boyz at $10.99 each; and
_ play sets such as a spa for $49.99 and a club lounge for $34.99.
The new Bratz have less makeup and more ample clothing and are more flexible than earlier versions, said MGA CEO Isaac Larian. They have been in development since December, when the appeals court put on hold the order for MGA to hand over the trademark to Mattel.
The Bratz franchise was once worth as much as $1 billion and was MGA's biggest brand. But its popularity peaked in 2005 and sales have been sliding since. Meanwhile, MGA launched its "Moxie Girlz" brand. SpinMaster also introduced "Liv" dolls. And Barbie, who long ruled the roost of fashion dolls, has been experiencing a resurgence.

While Bratz will be at all major toy retailers, it is unclear how much shelf space they will get.
"I think retailers are going to expect some special accommodation to be changing their shelf space allocations at such a late date," said Needham & Co. analyst Sean McGowan.
MGA said retailers set aside shelf space for the line in January, however. And Toys R Us spokeswoman Kathleen Waugh said the new Bratz dolls are "being accommodated within the normal flexing of space in the fashion dolls area for the fall set."
MGA is a privately held company based in Van Nuys, Calif. In addition to Bratz and Moxie Girlz it makes Little Tikes, Rescue Pets and Zapf toys.

Jason Wu Plays Dolls

Jason Wu, the fashion designer best known for creating first lady Michelle Obama's inaugural gown first made a splash designing dolls, so its no surprise that he's back in the dollhouse working on a collection for revered toy maker Madame Alexander. Wu has reimagined Madame Alexander's Cissy dolls, in couture. There's also a NEOCissy collection. Is it just me, or does L'Enfant Terrible (she's the doll in the black bustier bodice with fishnet sleeves and black taffeta mini skirt... mon dieu!) look a bit like Reba McEntire dressed as a dominatrix?

Wu has been doing more than playing with dolls. Not only did he recently lend his name to a digital camera, but the wunderkind designer tells Vogue UK that he'll soon be launching a line of leather goods. The designer says, “[My eyewear collection] is only the beginning of my accessories range, stay tuned for later this year — there is more to come. Now that I have an established ready-to-wear business it seems to be the natural step to expand into the world of Jason Wu. There is so much more I would like to do to complete the vision."
As long as that vision includes fewer dominatrix Reba dolls, we'll be happy.

Steiff To Open First Gallery in USA

Steiff North America announced today that it will open its first-ever boutique in the United States. Steiff NA president Jim Pitocco says, “It is our goal to make this store a wonderful destination and introduce Steiff to a whole-new generation.”

The store will be located in the up-scale Atrium Mall in the Boston suburb of Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. The grand opening will take place Aug. 5 and will feature several not-to-be-missed events.

During the first two weeks of operation, the store will showcase nine historic items from its museum, including the first modern teddy bear ever made—the famous “Richard Steiff” bear. It will be the first time this Teddy will have ever been shown in the United States.

Also included in the exhibition will be the first Mickey and Minnie Mouse ever mass-produced for the Disney Studios. Walt Disney himself selected Steiff as the manufacturer of Mickey and Minnie Mouse dolls because of the company’s reputation for quality. The Disney dolls that will be on display at the Steiff Gallery date from 1931 and 1932. During the two-week gala, the company will have a special gift (while supplies last) for any visitors born in those years or who are 31 or 32 years young: a Steiff miniature collectible five-way-jointed mohair teddy bear. Everyone will receive Steiff balloons in addition to the opportunity to view plush history.

The company wants to make sure that its dealers are comfortable with the new store. A company spokesperson says that the new Steiff Gallery will be a flagship, much like the Prada and Coach stores on Park and Fifth Avenues in New York City. By raising the visibility of the Steiff brand, she says, everyone will benefit.

As Aug. 5 nears, visit Steiff USA for more information.

HEA Exclusive Sold Out

The Happily Ever After exclusive doll by Kimberly Lasher sold out in a record time.
"Rosie" was announced via HEA's newsletter on Thursday with only a sketch by the artist.

"We are thrilled at the response!" squealed HEA store manager Glenn Lash. "Ms Lasher's dolls are the hottest thing in the doll world so the sell out should not be a total surprise." added Mr. Glenn almost hyperventilating.

Just before passing out, Mr. L shared that he and Mr. Ferry had lunch with Ms Lasher while at IDEX in Orlando, Florida to discuss the exclusive. "It was poolside," and Mr. G. fell gracefully to the floor.
